Michigan licenses the trades that install standby generators — electrical contractors, and the mechanical and plumbing contractors that handle gas lines. Every license is public record. No license number? Search by name
If a company hasn't published a license number, you can search the state's records by business or individual name on LARA's license search. Choose a license type (Electrical Contractor is the usual one for generator work) and enter the name.
What to look for
- Status "Issued" — the license is current. "Lapsed" or "Expired" means it isn't, even if the company still advertises it.
- The name matches — the record shows the licensee and business name. It should match the company you're hiring, not an unrelated subcontractor.
- Permit history — the record lists permits pulled under the license. A generator installer should have a trail of electrical permits; an empty history is worth asking about.
