The same rules of thumb apply anywhere: standby generator installation is electrical work (plus a gas connection), so your state licenses the contractors who do it. Check the license with your state's licensing board before hiring — in Michigan you can use our license verification tool — and prefer companies for which standby power is the core business, not a sideline.
